France retains its position as the second largest ice cream producer in Europe. With 591 million liters produced in 2022, France is ahead of Italy (571 million liters) on the podium, but remains behind Germany (620 million), according to Eurostat figures published on Monday. Spain (321 million) and Belgium (180 million) complete the top 5.
On the other hand, it is in Italy where the ice cream market generates the most revenue: 1.3 billion euros in turnover last year, that is, an average price of 2.3 euros per liter, compared to 1.9 euros in France and 1.5 euro in Germany.
In total, European ice cream production amounted to 3.2 billion liters in 2022, 5% more than in 2021.
France leading exporter
As in 2021, in 2022 France was the leading European exporter of ice cream to third countries, with 53 million kg of ice cream exported, that is, 21% of the continent’s total exports (250 million kg, for 930 million of euros). They are followed by the Netherlands (42 million kg exported), Italy (31 million), Germany (28 million) and Belgium (23 million).
For their part, European imports of ice cream from third countries represented 61 million kg, worth 203 million euros. By volume, European ice cream imports fell 14% last year, while exports fell 2%.
