According to a Cofidis study, 65% of parents say they have to limit themselves to the expenses related to the start of their children’s school year this year.

If global inflation tends to decline, the rise in the price of school supplies will remain strong during the next school year. It is +11.3% compared to the previous year, according to a survey carried out by the Family Union Confederation (CSF). “Families will have to spend between 900 and 1,700 euros on average for a child’s schooling,” says the report.

The clothing sector is the most affected by the restrictions

This is enough to put pressure on families despite the fact that the payment, for the most modest, of the back-to-school subsidy (ARS), increased by 5.6% compared to 2022. Thus, according to a study* carried out for Cofidis, 65% of parents say they have to limit themselves to the expenses related to their children’s return to school this year, a figure that rises to 79% for young parents (25/34 years).

Clothing will be the most affected by these spending cuts (59% of parents surveyed), followed by sports equipment (40%), enrollment in extracurricular activities (37%) and school supplies (37%).

For their part, 46% of parents foresee favoring the purchase of new equipment to the detriment of enrollment in extracurricular activities. What is more worrying is that “registration to the dining room will also be an expense for which 13% of the parents surveyed plan to reduce their expenses,” we can read.

Faced with inflation, French households will resort even more to system D. 49% of parents surveyed will opt for reuse (especially for supplies, clothing, equipment, etc.) and 34% will resort to reusable products. second hand. 13% could contract consumer credit.

“Parents, and particularly young parents, choose to limit themselves in order to limit costs. However, they implement strategies that allow them to arbitrate between the expenses that they consider essential and non-essential in terms of education,” says Mathieu Escarpit. , Marketing Director of Cofidis France.

According to the CSF study, the average cost of a complete list of material at the beginning of the 2023 school year for a primary school student amounts to 233 euros compared to 190 euros in 2022 (+ 23%), 371 euros for a secondary school. student (+3.5%) and 427 euros for a high school student (+3.1%).

Clothing and sports equipment represent the most affected expense items with an increase of 12%, while the cost of stationery material increased by 25%, according to the CSF report.
