Given the increase in cases of fraud in the weighing of food products such as fruits and vegetables in bulk, agri-food distribution brands are taking action. Some supermarkets now have employees weigh in instead of the customer.
But the idea is also to fight stowaways. “There are people who weigh their fruits and vegetables and then add more to the bag” or “people who remove the labels from the fruits and vegetables to stick them elsewhere,” says a person in charge of Auchan Boxes at Actu Strasbourg.
Organic tomatoes at conventional prices
“I cheat to have good produce, I take the organic tomatoes and trade them at the price of the cheapest tomatoes,” admits a young BFMTV customer.
These types of fraud can also be carried out through automatic payments. “The more we make the consumer work, the more he can be deceived,” says Pascale Hebel, a consumer specialist and deputy deputy director at consultancy C-Ways.
“This is a sign of increasing tension due to inflation,” which has been close to 21% for two years in food products. According to figures from the Ministry of the Interior, thefts in exhibitors increased by 14% in 2022.
