Two months after the riots, some vandalized businesses have yet to reopen

Nearly two months after the riots that swept France following Nahel’s death in Nanterre, many French businesses remain shuttered and suffering operating losses.

Vandalized premises, broken windows, looted stocks… More than two months after the riots that arose after the death of Nahel, several businesses affected have still not been able to reopen their doors. Bebe Perrichon, director of a beauty salon in Marseille, does not plan to resume her activity until October, once business is restored.

For her, the bill is getting heavier every day as operating losses continue to mount. “It hurts a lot and I’m trying to motivate the team,” she told BFMTV. In total, her lost earnings are around 400,000 euros and the cost of the works exceeds 150,000 euros.

Closed since June 20, another independent Marseille trader struggles to obtain insurance compensation despite estimated losses of 200,000 euros.

“The insurance covers a minimum of 35,000 euros in total,” shares Frank Attali. “We do not take into account at all that it is an extraordinary escape after a riot,” he laments. Insurance would only apply in your case the classic theft guarantees.

In early July, Economy and Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire had asked insurers to commit to reducing the indemnity period but also to maximizing the amount of deductibles. Various funds have also been deployed to help traders, including 10 million euros in Marseille, where nearly 400 companies fell victim to the riots.
