In a time of energetic sobriety, this is an offer that further justifies its existence. The Tempo option was created by EDF almost 30 years ago to encourage subscribing individuals to reduce their electricity consumption during power grid peaks. It thus succeeds the EJP option (Erasing Peak Days) to which it is no longer possible to subscribe since 1998, but which continues to benefit approximately 400,000 households in France, while several hundred thousand benefit from the Tempo system.
Six tariff bands
Specifically, the Tempo offer divides the annual calendar based on a color code in the number of three, distinguishing each time between peak hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and off-peak hours at night to determine the variation in the price of electricity. . Blue refers to the 300 days of the year during which the household benefits from reduced prices by 30% in peak hours compared to the price of the regulated sale price. These savings reach 41% of the price of electricity in off-peak hours compared to the rate of the regulated sales rate. The white applies to 43 days of the year and reduces these savings to 10% in peak hours and 24% in off-peak hours.
The heart of the option lies in the color red that refers to 22 days between November 1 and March 31. Then it is possible to save around 16% on the price of electricity in off-peak hours, but the price per kWh is three times higher in peak hours to encourage lower electricity consumption to reduce the stress on the network. The client is informed the day before at 11 am of the color of the following day through his Tempo calendar, by SMS or email, by calling the voice server or by consulting the EDF & Moi application. The color is also displayed on the electric meter at 8 p.m.
Useful gestures in case of red day
Faced with a threefold increase in the price of electricity during consumption peaks, it is first necessary to have an alternative mode of heating. EDF also provides some useful gestures to accentuate the reduction in electricity consumption, such as lowering the heating a few degrees, recharging appliances earlier and unplugging them as much as possible, or changing the use of appliances after 10 p.m. in favor of eco mode.
According to the energy company, Tempo customers reduce their electricity consumption by an average of 23% during red days, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 10,000 homes.
Some criteria are required to benefit from the Tempo option, starting with the subscription of a contract at the regulated sale price of a minimum power of 9 kVA, which is the case for half of the French. Another important threshold is that the customer must consume at least 3 megawatt hours of electricity per year. “An average consumer of residential portfolio is around 5 megawatt hours per year”, specifies Benoît Lamberti. Finally, the equipment of the home is also important.
Since this summer, EDF’s director of marketing and customer experience has already seen a number of subscriptions increase for several days compared to the usual level. “We have targeted 5 million consumers that we will offer to look into the Tempo option if they are interested,” he adds. So last week we launched a communication operation with clients, as well as only a dedicated toll-free number so that they can discuss the offer with an advisor.”
