The payment of IMI started in May, with the legislation governing the tax stipulating that it is paid in one installment, in that month, when its value is less than €100. If the amount is between 100 and 500 euros, it will be divided into two installments, paid in May and November.
For an amount above 500 euros, it will be divided into three installments of the same amount, payable in May, August and November. For these situations, the deadline ends today.
According to data from the Tax and Customs Administration (AT), provided in response to Lusa, 4,082,440 IMI assessments have been issued this year, of which 679,533 exceed 500 euros.
Since 2019, taxpayers have the option to pay the entire tax in May, which means that the installment system is omitted. According to AT data, 556,011 taxpayers have opted for early payment of IMI for 2022 this year.
The IMI rates are set annually by the municipalities, within a range between 0.3% and 0.45% (for urban buildings and building land), and it is also up to them to decide whether to join the IMI family, a mechanism that gives a discount to live-in families, or about the application of higher rates to vacant or dilapidated buildings.
