Russia has restarted its “energy terror” by attacking essential infrastructure in Ukraine as winter approaches, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Chmygal denounced on Friday. “The phase of energy terror has already begun,” he said at an economic forum in kyiv, quoted by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency. “We see it through the destruction of infrastructure” linked to fuel production and storage and “the first attacks” against power plants “in the last two weeks,” he added.
The head of government, however, estimated that Ukraine was better prepared than the previous winter, when Moscow’s attacks on energy infrastructure periodically plunged millions of people into darkness and cold. “We are much better prepared and stronger than last year,” in particular thanks to the supply of Western air defense systems, he stressed.
A new barrage of more than 40 cruise missiles on Thursday
Russia bombs Ukrainian cities almost every night using kamikaze missiles and drones. On Thursday, a new barrage of more than 40 cruise missiles killed three people in Kherson, in the south, and wounded seven in kyiv, the capital. While most of the projectiles were shot down, some hit civilian infrastructure, according to Ukrainian authorities.
For the first time in six months, energy facilities in the west and center of the country were damaged by Russian attacks, causing power outages in several regions, Ukrainian supplier Ukrenergo said on Telegram.
