Three quarters of VPE/SMEs are convinced of the benefits of digital technology, but less than last year, France Num, a system of the General Directorate of Enterprises (DGE), observed on Monday, and a significant proportion consider it difficult to generate benefits thanks to him.
Thus, in 2023, 76% of managers consider digital technology as “a real benefit” for their company, compared to 81% in 2022, reveals this third annual France Num barometer dedicated to the digital transformation of VSE/SMEs (companies with less than 250 employees).
Only 39% (+2 points) of them, in particular, believe that digital technology allows them to generate profits and 19% (stable) that digital technology wastes more time than it saves.

“The digital transition (…) is a springboard for our small and medium-sized businesses, a vector of growth (…)”, reacted Olivia Grégoire, minister of SMEs. “We will continue to encourage them on this path,” she continued, noting that “clearly, there is no one size fits all.”
Furthermore, the ability to attract clients through the Internet varies greatly from one sector to another: if half (51%, +8 points) of VPE/SMEs have at least 5% of their clients that come from the Internet, this The proportion rises to 79% for the Accommodation and Restaurants sector and 68% for the Personal Services sector.
Regardless of the utility they derive from it, VSE/SMEs are massively present online: 84% (-2 points) have at least one visibility solution (67% a website, 61% at least one social network account ) and 26% purchased keywords to appear at the top of search results.
However, almost half (48%, +4 points and +12 points compared to 2020) express fears related to cybersecurity.
AI is still little used
There are still few companies that use artificial intelligence solutions (5%), but this figure doubles in the case of personal services.
On the other hand, they seem to have a greater interest in data analysis solutions: 11% use them and even 16% of those who operate in the commerce sector.
Finally, 42% are already implementing actions in favor of digital sobriety while 15% plan to do so within 12 months.
France Num has helped around 200,000 VSE/SMEs since 2020 to integrate digital into their daily management. 9,453 companies responded to this survey.
