Gaming turnover increased by 4% in the first half, growth that benefits all segments, but more particularly sports betting and online poker, according to a report from the National Gaming Authority published on Wednesday. Overall, the turnover of the gaming sector (excluding casinos) reached €5.3 billion during the first six months of the year.
The activities of Française Des Jeux (FDJ) and PMU, which represent 78% of the gross gaming product (GDP) of the market, are registering “very good dynamics”. As for the FDJ, GDP increased by 2% to €3.3 billion in the half-year, thanks in particular to sports betting activities at points of sale and online, whose bets increased by 13% during the period, placing about 2.3%. billion euros.
Between 85 and 150 million euros at stake for the Rugby World Cup
Sports betting benefited from the dynamics generated by the 2022 Soccer World Cup with the attraction of new bettors, notes the ANJ. A phenomenon that should be repeated with the 2023 Rugby World Cup: the fact that the competition will be held in France in September and October “will undoubtedly reinforce the enthusiasm of bettors for this competition, given its strong media coverage and the increase in planned marketing investments”. by gambling operators during this period,” says the Authority. The ANJ estimates that the bets committed for this competition will reach between 85 and 150 million euros, and online operators also plan to convince some 450,000 new players in September and October.
In the first half of the year, the online gaming sector as a whole recorded a 10% growth in its GGR to around €1.2 billion, “on a comparable sports and equestrian calendar.” Online poker activity is becoming increasingly important in the sector with a market share that has increased by almost 3% in one year.
The PMU, for its part, recorded a 1% increase in its GGR to €873 million in the half-year, and point-of-sale horse racing betting activity stabilized after the jump following the health crisis.
