The attendance of tourist accommodation during the 2023 summer season was “very slightly higher” than the previous year, driven by foreign clients and campsites, according to figures published on Wednesday by INSEE.
From May to August, “collective tourism accommodation” (hotels, campsites, residences) recorded 249.4 million nights, that is, 600,000 more nights than in 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics. Summer attendance is 3.3% higher than in 2019, before the health crisis.
Campsites had a good season with 118.9 million overnight stays (+3% compared to 2022). In hotels, on the other hand, occupancy fell 1.6% year-on-year with 89 million nights.

The success of the camping alone explains the good summer figures, estimates INSEE.
The return of foreign tourists is confirmed (overnight stays increased by 6.8% compared to the summer of 2022), but French clients alone continue to represent two-thirds of overnight stays.
In hotels, the British returned in droves (+26.8% to 4.9 million nights). They alone account for more than half of the additional 1.7 million foreign overnight stays in the 2023 summer season, followed by American (4.1 million overnight stays) and German (3.6 million overnight stays) guests. .
In campsites, the Dutch continue to be the most present among foreign tourists, at the pre-crisis level, with 11.4 million overnight stays (+4.4% compared to 2022), and the Germans are more numerous (+10 .8% or 8.8 million nights). .
The number of tourists on the coast and in the mountains remained stable. Rural areas performed well, gaining one million nights (+1%) thanks to campsites (+3.1%).
Ultimately, accommodation turnover increased by 10.1% from April to July compared to the same period in 2022, driven by both the increase in nights in hotels and campsites and the increase in prices of 4.5% , echoing inflation.
