Volkswagen said Thursday that its production network was back online after a major IT outage. The latter caused the cessation of production in most of the group’s German factories.
The incident, which according to VW began early Wednesday morning, affected all of the group’s brands.
“The IT infrastructure issues on the Volkswagen network were resolved overnight and the network is stable again,” VW said Thursday, without providing details on the impact or cause of the incident.
However, the manufacturer stated that an external attack was unlikely to be the cause of the outage.
“Malfunction of network components”
Volkswagen cites a “computer malfunction of network components” at the world headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, which disrupted production at the production complex.
“The affected applications are currently being restarted. The global production network is operational and production is expected to proceed as planned,” VW said.
The disruption also affected German car plants in Emden, Osnabrück, Hannover, Dresden and Zwickau, as well as component plants in Braunschweig, Kassel, Chemnitz and Salzgitter.
An Audi spokesman said on Wednesday that its production had been affected. Porsche had no immediate comment.
In August, Toyota was also forced to halt production at 14 Japanese factories after a computer system processing orders for auto parts failed.
