Tourism: Far East, the Mediterranean coast… where will the French go this autumn?

According to data from the Kayak comparator, Asian destinations, especially Japanese ones, have experienced an explosion in searches compared to last year. Regarding prices, Mediterranean destinations show prices that have decreased considerably compared to the summer period.

“Go further for less.” With this formula Kayak summarizes the travel trends of the French for the fall season. With summer about to end, the comparator analyzed searches for flights and hotels from January 1 to August 15 during the period between September 15 and November 30. This shows, in particular, that the Far East appears to be the star destination by the end of 2023, in particular Japan.

In fact, a certain number of Asian destinations benefit from the lifting of health measures and record an explosion in flight searches compared to the same period in 2022. The leading trio is made up of Osaka (+336%), Hong – Kong (+312%) and the Japanese capital Tokyo (+279%), closely followed by Taipei (+272%). “For a seven-day trip to Tokyo or Osaka, the new KAYAK tool “Best time to travel” estimates that the best departure date from Paris for these two destinations is November, adds the comparator. In fact, the temperature around “13°C seems perfect for visiting the country outside of the most popular tourist season.”

Significant reductions in the price of flights to Tunisia and Algiers

Those who have not left this summer will, however, be able to make up for it in closer destinations and with significantly reduced prices. This is the case of European destinations whose prices decrease by an average of 28% between September 15 and November 30 compared to the summer period, an evolution driven by three Portuguese cities: Porto (-49% to 100 euros per one-way trip and return on average), Lisbon (-40% to 112 euros) and Faro (-40% to 136 euros). But these are not the most important decreases in the Mediterranean region, since it is the prices of round-trip flights to Tunisia and Algiers that experience the largest decreases, respectively -53% (162 euros) and -51% ( 201 euros).

Kayak also reveals the weeks that allow you to benefit from the best prices on flights. For an international flight, last week was the most economically advantageous, with reductions of up to -25% on average in the price of the plane ticket compared to the most expensive week, from October 17 to 23. At a European level, the most profitable week will be that of October 9 to 15, it seems to be the most profitable with reductions of up to 45% on average compared to the most expensive week, the one preceding All Saints’ Day.

More forward-thinking French travelers and car rental fans

The site that compares flight and hotel prices around the world also reveals some variations in behavior among French travelers in this year 2023. Firstly, they seem more forward-looking, since this year they search for their hotels 116 days in advance, compared to 106. days earlier in 2022. In addition, they are looking for significantly shorter stays for their long-haul international trips (outside Europe) with an average duration of 8 days compared to 13 days before the pandemic. Car rental is increasingly popular, with Kayak seeing a 38% increase in car rental searches between 2022 and 2023.

Finally, the comparator provides some data on the profile of vacationers and concludes that there has been a greater representation in one year of single travelers searching for flights (+28%) and of couples searching for hotels (+25%). .
