This Saturday, Israel suffered the deadliest attack committed on its territory since its creation. At the origin of this offensive, whose number of victims continues to increase, is Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist movement, born in 1987 and committed to an armed struggle against the Jewish State. But how is this organization, classified as terrorist by the United States and the European Union, financed?
Its financing is based on several different mechanisms, starting with taxes. Despite the blockade on its borders, the Gaza Strip has in fact created a clandestine network to import Egyptian products. Every month, the movement raises 12 million dollars thanks to the taxes it imposes on Egypt.
100 million dollars a year from Iran
But Hamas benefits above all from the financial support of several countries such as Qatar and Turkey. The largest donor by far remains Iran: $100 million a year.
The country also supplies weapons and trains its soldiers, explains General Jérôme Pelistrani.
According to Forbes magazine, this support makes Hamas the second richest terrorist organization in the world, after the Islamic State.
