The Swedish furniture store took exceptional measures following the knife attack that occurred on Monday afternoon in Brussels, Belgium. In its stores located in Belgian territory, the chain specializing in flat furniture has adopted “additional security measures for the reopening of the stores on Tuesday,” Ikea Belgium spokesperson Colombine Nicolay told the Sudinfo media, this Tuesday, October.
However, he did not want to give more details. “You will understand that I cannot detail the measures that are being taken, but customers can come in complete safety and the opening hours of our stores remain unchanged. We remain in close contact with the authorities,” she explained.
This announcement comes as the attacker arrested on Tuesday killed two Swedes on Monday night. Belgian Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden indicated on Tuesday morning that Swedish diplomatic posts and Swedish activities in Belgium would be subject to increased surveillance. Ikea has eight stores in Belgium, two of them in and around Brussels.
“Adapted measures” in its French stores
While the company has not clearly indicated that it is implementing additional safety measures in its French stores, it claims to be mobilized to ensure the safety of customers and employees in France.
“All our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims of Monday night’s attack in Brussels,” Ikea France added.
In total, 43 Ikea stores are located in France.
