For his part, Olivier Véran, government spokesman, indicated at the end of the Council of Ministers that “Totalenergies has assumed its responsibilities.” This maintenance will allow “to protect the French from the economic consequences of current geopolitical events,” he continues. He remembers that oil prices have risen sharply since the start of the attacks on Israel and Gaza.
Contacted by AFP, the Totalenergies group did not want to comment on these statements, referring to its previous announcements of September 12: it had committed to extending the limit “beyond the end of 2023, as long as prices remain high.”
In early October, Patrick Pouyanné threatened to reconsider this measure if the government decided to apply a new tax on refinery margins.
