China has invested billions of euros in Serbia and neighboring Balkan countries in infrastructure and energy projects in recent years, aiming to expand its economic footprint in this part of Europe.
The European Union as a whole remains Serbia’s largest trading partner (38.9 billion euros in 2022), with Germany in the lead (8.19 billion euros), according to the Serbian Institute of Statistics. But China is in second place, with 5.8 billion euros in trade last year, with a trade balance very unfavorable for Serbia.
