Amazon will hire 6,500 temporary workers by the end of the year (fewer than in previous years)

For the peak of activity at the end of the year, Amazon expects 6,500 temporary workers, while in 2021 it needed 12,000 people. But in the meantime, its regular workforce has continued to grow in France and now exceeds 20,000 employees.

Amazon needs you. Like every year, the American electronic retailer is preparing to launch its large wave of hiring temporary workers to help regular employees during the peak of activity at the end of the year. This year, 6,500 jobs will be filled across Amazon’s various sites.

Although labor needs are significant, the number of temporary workers hired has decreased compared to previous years. In 2019, the firm called on 9,000 temporary workers for the rush of the last quarter and in 2021 a record of 12,000 people arrived to complete the e-commerce giant’s workforce.

But since then, the online sales boom fueled by the Covid-19 epidemic in previous years has slowed. Above all, Amazon has an increasing number of employees on permanent contracts and the need to turn to seasonal workers is less pressing. The company, which employs 15,500 people in France in 2021 and 18,500 in 2022, this year exceeded 20,000 employees with permanent contracts in its 37 logistics centers and IT infrastructures.

France, a secondary market for Amazon

However, for Amazon, this wave of seasonal hiring remains essential in its human resources policy, especially in this period marked by labor shortages.

The company thus highlights the working conditions that it considers advantageous compared to other companies in the sector: 1,000 euros “Macron bonus” paid in 2023 to its employees, months of additional paternity/maternity leave offered, training diploma, thirteenth month, participation system . ..

Amazon France, which recalls that it has invested 20 billion euros in France since 2010, estimates that it has maintained nearly 100,000 jobs in the country, of which 20,000 direct and 77,000 indirect (construction, subcontractors, external sellers, etc.) . .

However, France is far from being Amazon’s most important market in Europe. In its first “Transparency Report” (mandatory since this year) sent to the European authorities, the company reveals that it has more than 181 million regular users in the European Union, of which almost 35 million in France.

Germany is Amazon’s largest market on the old continent, with 60.4 million monthly active users. Well ahead of Italy (38.1 million), France (34.6 million) and Spain (25 million). The group has 250 warehouses and logistics centers in the EU (37 of them in France).
