Storm Ciaran: why it will take time to restore power to all affected homes

The President of the Republic traveled to Finisterre where he expressed his wish that the electricity supply be restored at the end of the weekend in 90% of the homes without electricity after the passage of Ciaran.

While traveling through Finisterre, one of the departments most affected by storm Ciaran, Emmanuel Macron believes that the event “was well managed.” “It was immediately necessary to clear access to the roads and all this was done with great cohesion,” he stressed, recalling that rural areas are the most affected at the local level. Now we have a fight to restore “normal life” as soon as possible. as possible and therefore finish cleaning.” The President of the Republic announced the sending of 60 additional military firefighters to the site.

Some areas will have to wait beyond the weekend according to Enedis

The situation is improving, but some areas of Brittany and Normandy will have to wait a few more days before being connected to the electricity grid again. Guest of BFMTV, Enedis director of operations and systems, Thierry Sudret, was cautious as more than 400,000 homes remain without electricity. “There are a certain number of hard cores, particularly in central Brittany and in the department of Manche, where the networks have been cut in these areas,” he indicated.

The Enedis representative, however, specified that in certain very specific areas it is possible that the electricity supply will not be restored this weekend “because they are still difficult to access.” In the English Channel these are, as expected, areas close to the coast.

“FIRE” records the deployment of 400 additional technicians

Enedis confirms that some Breton and Norman areas have “accessibility problems on the roads” due, in particular, to “fallen trees” and that its teams are collaborating with state services to resolve the situation. Some places are beginning to be “a little more accessible”, according to Thierry Sudret, who estimates that the situation will be clearer “at the end of the day”, since the next Enedis point is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The electricity distributor adds that 400 technicians have joined the 3,000 already present on the ground as part of the deployment of the Rapid Intervention Force in Electricity (FIRE). “We are organizing reinforcements and our mobilization is complete, even from a material point of view, explains Enedis. If it is possible to mobilize neighboring departments, we do it, but some technicians have left Alsace, Franche-Comté or even Aquitaine.”
