The SME Preligens will design a surveillance AI for military intelligence services

A contract of 240 million euros was notified by the DGA to Preligens. This French SME has created an algorithm to monitor and alert intelligence services in case of suspicious activity on land, in and under the sea and in the air.

Just a few days ago, Emmanuel Macron warned of threats to essential infrastructure and the need to monitor them closely. This strategy is under construction. The General Directorate of Armament (DGA) announces the notification of a contract of 240 million euros for 7 years to Preligens, a French company specialized in the analysis of military data.

Within the framework of this contract called Tornado (Optical and Radar Processing by Artificial Neurons via Detectors), it will provide its services to the joint intelligence function of the Ministry of the Armed Forces. Under the coordination of the Military Intelligence Directorate (DRM), this group brings together the intelligence chains of the three armies and those of the Special Operations Command and the Cyber Defense Command.

Preligens must provide software to analyze data from multiple sources, in particular satellite via spy satellites, but also from military, air and sea bases or collected during reconnaissance missions. An artificial intelligence will use the collected data to create, thanks to algorithms, maps and detect objects “for the domains of visible, infrared and radar images”.

These tools send alerts when an unusual event occurs. For example, they could detect traffic near strategic areas like undersea cables. Humans then verify the data to make decisions and pass on the information.

Created in 2016 by two French scientists, Arnaud Guérin and Renaud Allioux, Preligens is a defense nugget. Headquartered in France, with agencies in five countries (including the United States), Preligens currently has more than 200 employees, most of them scientists working on satellite images.
