Ukraine’s entry into the European Union would be “a catastrophe” for agriculture in Europe, Arnaud Rousseau, president of the first French agricultural union, the FNSEA, reacted on Wednesday in an interview with regional newspapers. The European Commission on Wednesday recommended opening EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, and granting candidate status to Georgia.
According to him, Ukrainian agriculture “does not follow the same rules”, adding that it represents “the equivalent of a quarter of European agriculture, mainly in the poultry sector and field crops, with environmental and production standards well below our practices”.
Agriculture Minister Marc Fesneau will travel to Ukraine on Friday and Saturday at the invitation of his Ukrainian counterpart, Mykola Solsky. According to the French ministry, this trip will make it possible to reaffirm France’s support for Ukraine in the agricultural field, strengthen their cooperation and address all issues of common interest.
