The year-on-year change in the consumer price index (CPI) was 9.3% in September, 0.4 percentage points higher than the previous month and the highest since October 1992, the INE confirmed on Thursday.
“Rounded to one decimal place, this percentage corresponds to the value of the quick estimate released on September 30,” says the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
In September, the underlying inflation indicator (CPI excluding unprocessed food and energy) registered a year-on-year change of 6.9%, a rate 0.4 percentage points higher than in August and “the highest value since February 1994” .
The change in the energy products index was 22.2% (1.8 percentage points lower than the previous month’s value), while the unprocessed food index registered the highest year-on-year change since July 1990. , at 16.9% ( 15.4% in August).
By spending category and compared to the previous month, INE points to the increase in year-over-year changes in ‘clothing and footwear’, ‘restaurants and hotels’ and ‘accessories, home appliances and current home maintenance’, with variations from 1.7%, 17.7% and 11.9% respectively (-1.6%, 16.3% and 10.6% in the previous month).
Conversely, the prices of the ‘transport’ and ‘leisure, recreation and culture’ classes fell to 9.2% and 3.1% respectively (10.4% and 3.9% in the previous month).
In September, in the classes with the largest positive contributions to the year-over-year variation of the CPI, ‘food and non-alcoholic drinks’, ‘restaurants and hotels’, ‘housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels’ and of ‘transport’.
In the classes with negative contributions, ‘health’ stands out.
Compared to the previous month, it is worth noting that the contributions to the year-over-year change in the CPI of ‘food and non-alcoholic beverages’, ‘clothing and footwear’, ‘accessories, household appliances and current maintenance of residences” and ‘restaurants and hotels’.
On the other hand, the reduction in the contribution of ‘transport’, ‘leisure, recreation and culture’ and ‘housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels’ is striking.
According to INE, the monthly variation of the CPI in September was 1.2% (-0.3% in the previous month and 0.9% in September 2021), while the average variation of the last 12 months was 6.0% ( 5.3% in August).
The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) showed a year-on-year change of 9.8% in September, 0.5 percentage point higher than the previous month and 0.2 percentage point lower than Eurostat’s estimated value for the euro area (in August exchange rate in Portugal 0.2 percentage point above the euro area).
Excluding unprocessed food and energy, the HICP in Portugal reached a year-on-year change of 7.9% in September (7.3% in August), higher than the corresponding euro area rate (estimated at 6.1 %). profile seen in recent months,” emphasizes INE.
