Company manager, project manager, former boss: in 2023, almost a third of French people (32%) will be part of a “business dynamic”, a percentage that increases two points compared to 2021, according to a study by Ifop for Bpifrance published on Thursday. “A third of French people will participate in a business dynamic in 2023, despite the deterioration of the economic situation in recent years,” Bpifrance congratulates itself in a press release accompanying the study. Among this 32% of respondents who have an “entrepreneurial appetite”, public banks bring together four profiles: business leaders, former business leaders, people who have taken steps to create a company (“project leaders”) and “intentionists”, who They plan to one day create their own company.
The progression observed between 2021 and 2023 is mainly explained by the increase in the percentage of people who declare themselves managers and former business leaders among the French population (+4 points in two years). The number of project managers is also growing, but more modestly (+2 points). Among those under 30 years of age, almost six out of every ten people (58%) participate in an entrepreneurial dynamic, a percentage that has increased seven points in two years. For Bpifrance business creation specialist Laurence Tassone, “young people are the main actors in business dynamics.” On the contrary, only 26% of women declare themselves (former) company directors, project leaders or intentional, compared to 37% of men.
France is catching up with the Anglo-Saxon Nordic countries
In terms of international comparisons, “the Anglo-Saxon countries (Great Britain, the United States) and northern Europe remain indisputably more entrepreneurial, but France is slowly recovering,” says Bpifrance CEO Nicolas Dufourcq. The director of studies at Bpifrance, Philippe Mutricy, assured that “if we relate the number of company creations to the stock of (already existing) companies, France occupies first or second place in the European Union.”
According to INSEE, for the second consecutive year, more than 1 million companies were created in France in 2022. The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies counted a total of 4.2 million companies in the Hexagon at the end of 2020. The Bpifrance survey was carried out through a self-administered online questionnaire from June 15 to 30, 2023, among a representative sample of 5,011 people.
