A Russian warship, which was in the English Channel, was closely monitored by the British navy, the Royal Navy said on Wednesday, October 22, referring to “a historic first.”
The “Russian destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov” was intercepted and then followed by “a Royal Navy destroyer and helicopter” for 48 hours.
“This is the first time that a Royal Navy warship has been tasked, under direct Alliance command, with an operation of this type, as part of wider security efforts deployed in northern Europe,” adds the British navy.
The French navy is participating in the effort.
In this way, “it used its advanced sensors and systems to intercept the Kulakov in the North Sea, monitoring its passage westwards through the English Channel towards the island of Ouessant off the French coast,” the Royal Navy says.
The French Navy and Dutch Air Force also participated in the effort, according to the Royal Navy.
This operation comes three weeks after French authorities diverted and forced to anchor a tanker from the Russian ghost fleet.
