The number of unemployed people registered with employment offices increased by 4.9% in October

The number of unemployed people registered with employment offices rose for the fourth month in a row in October, by 4.9% year-on-year and 1.1% quarter-on-quarter, to 303,356, according to data released today by the IEFP.

According to the Employment and Vocational Training Institute (IEFP), 303,356 people were registered in employment centers on the mainland and autonomous regions in October, a number representing 66.3% of a total of 457,753 applications.

This value represents an increase of 4.9% (+14,231 people) compared to October 2022 and 1.1% (+3,243 people) compared to September.

“For the increase in registered unemployment, compared to the same month in 2022, those registered for less than 12 months (+21,337) contributed in absolute variation. In the opposite direction, there has been a decline in those registered for 12 months or more. months in the employment file of the unemployment services (-7,106)”, details of the IEFP.

The number of registered unemployed young people increased by 8.6% (+2,813 people) in October compared to the same month in 2022 and increased in a chain by 5.8% (+1,930 people).

At the regional level, unemployment increased year-on-year in October 2023, with the exception of the Azores (-14.2%) and Madeira (-26.6%), with the highest value in the Algarve (+8.9% ) ).

Regarding the previous month, with the exception of the North and Central regions, “the trend is an increase in unemployment, with the largest variation occurring in the Algarve (+23.1%) and Alentejo (+7.4%) regions %)”, promotes the IEFP.

During the month analyzed, 54,694 unemployed people registered with employment services across the country, a number higher than in the same month of 2022 (+4,114, +8.1%) and lower than in September (-1,993; -3.5%) .

A total of 10,740 job openings were offered across the country this month, a number higher than the same month of 2022 (+1,211; +12.7%) and lower than the previous month (-1,979; -15.6%) .

The most representative occupational groups of registered unemployed people on the continent in October were ‘unskilled workers’ (26.5%), ‘personal service workers, security personnel and salespeople’ (19.8%), ‘administrative workers’ (12.0 %) and ‘specialists in intellectual and scientific activities’ (11.5%).

Compared to the same month of 2022 (excluding groups with little representation or significance in registered unemployment), there was an increase in unemployment in most occupational groups, with an emphasis on “plant and machine operators and assembly workers” (+10.1%) and “administrative staff” (+9.4%).

According to the IEFP, compared to the same month in 2022, unemployment shows an increase in the main economic sectors: ‘Agriculture’ (+4.4%), ‘Secondary’ (+7.6%) and ‘Tertiary’ (+6 .7%). ).
