The French have the feeling that the employment situation is no longer improving, which leads them to have a little more empathy towards job seekers, according to a Unédic* barometer published on Wednesday.
The survey carried out by Elabe shows that only 14% of respondents believe that the employment situation is improving (-2 points compared to 2022), while this feeling has been increasing since July 2020. 51% estimate that the situation Employment is deteriorating and 35% say it remains the same.
Therefore, employed workers are a little more afraid of becoming unemployed in the next two years (24%, +2 points) and job seekers are less confident in the possibility of finding a job in the next three months (37%, -3 points). , according to this fifth edition of the “barometer of the perception of unemployment and employment” since March 2020.
According to the authors of the study, “there is an almost perfect correlation between the capacity for empathy of society, and even more so of those who have jobs, towards those seeking employment and the employment situation.”
A “slightly more benevolent” look
In a context of perceived “tension” over the employment situation, while at the time of the survey the unemployment rate had increased to 7.2%, gaining 0.1 points in the second quarter (before moving to 7 .4% in the third), the barometer shows a “slightly more benevolent view towards job seekers,” they explained in a press conference.
Distrust towards job seekers is still present, but they are perceived less as “beneficiaries” (39%, -3 points). The majority of French people (62%) believe, however, that if the unemployed have difficulty finding work it is because they do not make concessions in their job search.
As for job seekers, 35% say they face criticism, for example by feeling disrespected or perceived as lazy.
The survey also shows that adherence to the French unemployment insurance model remains the majority, but is deteriorating in public opinion (57%, -2 points). Among employed workers, the drop is 13 points since March 2020, while among job seekers it remains generally stable. A kind of paradox when 93% of French people are convinced that everyone can go through a period of unemployment.
*Survey conducted on the Internet from August 29 to September 25 with a representative sample of about 4,500 people (including 1,500 job seekers), using the quota method.
