The French have more confidence in local companies than in the French economy

In a survey by OpinionWay for CCI France, 54% of respondents say they have confidence in companies in their territory, but only 27% in the French economy.

The French have twice as much confidence in companies in their territory as in the French economy in general, and their morale is weighed down by the economic situation, a survey by OpinionWay for CCI France found on Thursday. According to the results of this study, entitled “The French and companies in 2024”, 54% of respondents say they have confidence in companies in their territory, but only 27% in the French economy.

The economic situation in France has a negative impact on the morale of 57% of them, a positive impact on 19% and no impact on 24%. 72% say they are “worried” about both the French economy and the world economy, a little less (69%) about the European economy. Concern varies from one category to another: thus, people belonging to higher socio-professional categories have more confidence in the French economy this year (31%) than people from popular categories (20%). Only 20% of residents in rural communities are confident, compared to 34% in the Paris metropolitan area, and their morale is lower than elsewhere (66%).

The French pay attention to purchasing power, local production and short circuits

The majority of French people (55%) expect companies to make a greater commitment to purchasing power. However, 41% of those surveyed also mentioned local production and short circuits, and 39% wanted to bet on Made in France. Commitments on the revitalization of territories (cited by 21% of those surveyed), the inclusion in the company of young people, the elderly, the disabled, refugees, etc. (15%) or innovation (9%) seem much more secondary.

A majority (65%) of French people would also be willing to invest in a French company in exchange for a tax advantage, and 71% in exchange for preferential purchasing conditions for the products or services offered by this company. Among “the actors that act most to guide young people”, 69% of those surveyed cite independent educational centers (universities, schools), family centers (63%) and professional branches (55%). Companies are cited by 39% of those surveyed and the State by 23%.

Finally, almost half (46%) of French people believe that companies in sectors affected by the organization of the Olympic Games, such as tourism, construction or transport, are currently prepared to adequately host the event. Just over half (54%) believe they will be ready when the Games begin.

The study was carried out among a representative sample of 1,005 people, on January 3 and 4, 2024, using a self-administered online questionnaire.
