Average annual banking fees increase to 225 euros in 2024

After almost stagnating in 2023 (+0.3%), the average fees charged by banks in 2024 increase by 2.1% compared to last year.

This is the largest increase since 2016. According to the annual study by the comparator Panorabanques, banking fees increased by 2.1% in 2024 compared to last year, which brings the average customer bill to 225.20 euros.

A price increase that is partly due to a recovery effect compared to last year.

But its impact remains limited.

20.70 euros account maintenance fee per year

Account maintenance fees represent the cost that is increasing the most this year. On average, this rate line increased by 7.3% in the bank rate tables, reaching 20.70 euros in 2024. In value, there are 1.40 euros on average that customers will have to pay more each month.

Although around fifteen banks, most of which are local banks in large French networks, have increased these rates, at the same time this tariff line has been eliminated by several establishments.

Axa Banque, BforBank, BoursoBank, Fortuneo and, in particular, some local Crédit Agricole banks, will no longer charge their clients in 2024.

In total, “86% of French people are clients of banks that charge account maintenance fees in 2024, a stable figure compared to 2023,” specifies the comparator.

64.60 euros on average per year for a bank card

As for bank cards, their cost increased on average by almost 3%, going from 62.80 euros to 64.60 euros. In 2021, the average annual cost collected by banks for this means of payment reached 61.90 euros.

The cost of shifted withdrawals, which corresponds to withdrawals made at a bank other than your own, continues to increase in 2024.

Thus, the average rate for four displaced retirees per month increased to 10.6% in 2024. It takes into account the free nature of a limited number of displaced withdrawals each month. And it is precisely the drop in the number of these unbilled withdrawals that explains the average increase in these commissions.

Fewer free withdrawals per month at another bank

In total, ten banks, including Crédit Agricole Anjou-Maine and Crédit Agricole Centre-Est, have reduced the number of free withdrawals per month. On the contrary, the Banque populaire Val-de-Marne is the only establishment that has increased the number of uninvoiced withdrawals of another brand each month.

But some banks have also increased the cost of removing the unit, from the moment it is invoiced. This is the case of Banque Populaire Franche-Comté, Banque Postale or LCL.

Regarding commissions outside the euro zone, branch transfers and intervention commissions, they increase more moderately.

To achieve these results, Panorabanques analyzed the price evolution of 138 banks in mainland France, which represent more than 95% of the market share. The price lists were taken into account based on information found on the banks’ websites until December 11, 2023.
