Iran considers buying Sukhoi Su-35 jets from Russia

Iran is considering buying Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets from Russia, Air Force chief General Hamid Vahedi said on Sunday night, according to local media.

“The air force is considering the purchase of Sukhoi 35 from Russia” from Iran, General Hamid Vahedi told Borna, the news agency affiliated with the Sports Ministry.

The United States threatens strong sanctions against any country that trades with Iranian forces, particularly the Revolutionary Guards, included on its blacklist of “terrorist organizations.”

For years, Iran and Russia have discussed delivering Russian Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets to Tehran, which is also criticized by Washington.

“We hope to acquire so-called generation 4++ Su-35 fighters in the future,” he added.

Delivery of the Russian anti-missile system S-300

Tehran and Moscow closed a contract in 2007 for the delivery of the Russian S-300 anti-missile system, but in 2010 Moscow suspended the sale in application of a UN Security Council resolution against Iran’s nuclear program.

In 2015, shortly before the conclusion of an international agreement on the Iranian nuclear program, Moscow again authorized the delivery of the S-300. Iran’s Defense Ministry told the media in May 2016 that its country was now “in possession of the strategic S-300 system”.

Russia launched an Iranian observation satellite on August 9 that, according to the US press, could be used by Moscow to support its offensive in Ukraine, which Tehran refutes.
