Ukraine still needs weapons, but now it also needs electricity. After Russian attacks on power plants, 1,162 towns are without electricity, the Ukrainian emergency service announced. Its spokesman Oleksandre Khorounjy states that in addition, 4,000 towns have suffered power outages. These bombings would have damaged 30% of the energy infrastructure. Russia’s goal is to deprive Ukrainians of heat, water and electricity.
To deal with this situation, which worsens with the arrival of winter, Kyiv has already announced restrictions throughout the country starting Thursday. In a message posted on Telegram, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, head of the presidency, called on Ukrainians to “minimize their consumption”, otherwise “temporary cuts” will occur.
The Spanish army sends electric generators
These restrictions worry the population, who are encouraged to reduce their consumption between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. In some cities, electricity is cut off between midnight and 6 am for repairs. Companies, factories and administrations are also affected by the restriction measures. Even public lighting will be restricted at certain times. In Dnipro, BFMTV correspondent Anne-Laure Banse noted that certain neighborhoods are plunged into darkness as soon as night falls.
The population is trying to cope with this situation by equipping itself with wood stoves and preparing stocks of logs. Others are looking for generators.
Faced with this situation, Ukraine’s allied countries are providing assistance to provide Ukrainian soldiers with energy to power electrical equipment such as communication systems, intelligence, lighting, etc.
As of Wednesday, the Spanish government announced the shipment of four generators of 400 kilowatts of power and one of 150 kilowatts. This equipment was taken from the stocks of the Spanish Air Force. It will be transferred “in the next three days by land to a logistics center” in Poland, from where it will then be sent to Ukraine, the Spanish Ministry of Defense added. A shipment clearly insufficient to replace the plants destroyed in recent days by the strikes.
