Rebellious France asked Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday to subject European budget rules to a referendum to validate the 10 billion euro cut in public spending announced on Sunday by Bruno Le Maire.
“The Government must, if it wants to impose austerity on the French, assume responsibility for its policy and submit to the approval of all the French people,” the future president, head of the rebel list for the elections, urged in a press conference. Europeans, Manon. Aubry. She denounced “new European budget rules that will impose a social bleeding and an environmental bleeding.”
“Wave of austerity”
“We will not avoid a democratic debate on this issue,” added the head of the rebel deputies, Mathilde Panot. In the event of a – very probable – refusal by the President of the Republic, the left movement does not rule out organizing a referendum of shared initiative, she added, speaking of a “social carnage announced by Bruno Le Mayor.”
“These 10 billion euros are a preview of a wave of austerity like we have never experienced,” denounced Manon Aubry, co-president of the United Left group in the European Parliament, pointing her finger at the new European fiscal pact. “We cannot accept these cuts in public budgets without consulting the national representation and this being done by decree,” she stated.
“Cyclists”
The government confirmed on Tuesday that it would pass regulations and not an amended finance bill for 2024 to regulate the approximately 10 billion additional savings announced on Sunday. The president of the Finance Commission, the rebel Éric Coquerel, asked on Monday to hear from Bruno Le Maire on this issue.
“In a normally functioning democracy, the national representation has a say on this unprecedented austerity cure that has been announced again and whose contours we do not know exactly,” he added.
