Milk price: farmers invade the lobby of Lactalis headquarters in Laval

Protesters demand better remuneration for milk from the agri-food giant.

Farmers want to put pressure on Lactalis. At the initiative of the Peasant Confederation, dozens of protesters gathered this Wednesday early in the afternoon at the headquarters of the agri-food giant located in Laval (Mayenne).

Farmers marched to the lobby of the company’s headquarters to demand a fair price for milk that would cover their costs.

At the beginning of February, Lactalis proposed to its producers an increase of 15 euros per 1,000 liters of milk for the first two months of 2024, but the latter rejected it. In reality, this is equivalent to 42 cents per liter of milk, when producers require a minimum of 44 cents.

“He is the one who pays the least.”

This is not the first action taken against Lactalis in recent weeks. On Tuesday afternoon, around thirty farmers carried out a “punching action” near Vesoul to denounce the “low purchase price” of milk by Lactalis.

“The objective is to recover Lactalis at the negotiating table to discuss the price of milk with the producers,” Xavier Jarrot, a rancher from Velesmes (Haute Saône) and administrator of the FNPL (National Federation of Milk Producers), explained to AFP.

“Lactalis had announced a price of 405 euros per 1,000 liters for the first two months of the year. After the actions we have taken during the last month, they added 15 euros for January and February, but 440 euros are still far away.” what other dairies in the department pay today,” he lamented. “He is the biggest player in the sector, but he is the worst student, he is the one who pays the least,” she concluded.
