‘The safest plane you can find’: Boeing representative defends the 737 Max

On the sidelines of the Singapore Air Show, Boeing’s chief marketing officer for the Asia-Pacific region, David Schulte, reacted to recent setbacks for the American aircraft maker’s model.

Boeing is trying to put on a good show at the Singapore show. Last month, the US planemaker reported a drop in aircraft orders and deliveries, just weeks after an incident involving one of its Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 models, whose fuselage panel exploded during flight. The episode revived doubts about the reliability of the 737 Max, which had suffered two fatal accidents before the health crisis. According to Dave Schulte, who spoke on the sidelines of the event, the 737 Max 9 is “the safest airplane you can find today.”

Boeing’s chief marketing officer for the Asia-Pacific region, however, admitted that it is “by far the most scrutinized aircraft in the world, in the history of aviation” due to current events. The American planemaker also announced on Wednesday the departure of the head of the 737 Max program and a management reorganization of its civil aviation arm.

The C919, a model close to those already sold by Boeing and Airbus

Unable to present commercial aircraft at the show, Boeing instead focused on its fighter jets and its wide-body 777X, “the world’s largest twinjet,” whose first deliveries were delayed and are scheduled for 2025. so the passenger planes of its competitors Airbus and Comac take the light. The Chinese aircraft manufacturer produces in particular the C919 model to compete with the Boeing 737 and the Airbus 320. And on Tuesday an important order was announced: that of the Chinese company Tibet Airlines for 40 C919 and 10 ARJ21, a model intended for flights . regional.

“This aircraft is certainly part of our long-term plans,” said Dave Schulte of the C919. […] It’s a similar-sized aircraft to those produced by Boeing and Airbus.” His Airbus counterpart gave a similar speech earlier this week, saying the C919 “looks a bit like a narrow-body aircraft… ‘Airbus’ and that it is “Not very different” from the models that Airbus and Boeing already have. Finally, Boeing’s general director of marketing for the Asia-Pacific region warned that the Comac company would face supply disruptions similar to those experienced by the two giants.
