The number of company creations rose 2.7% in January in France, INSEE announced on Friday, after a 1.5% drop in December, and reached “an unprecedented level” more than a month since the start of the series in 2000.
This monthly increase is due in particular to an increase in registrations of micro-entrepreneurs (also +2.7%, after the stability of December), but also to a rebound in the creation of traditional companies (+2.8% after -4 ,0%).
These data are expressed corrected for seasonal variations and the effect of working days.
Business creation is increasing in most sectors and “reaching an unprecedented level in a month since the start of the series” in 2000, INSEE underlines.
Thus, in January, 94,066 companies were created, of which 34,360 traditional and 59,707 microenterprises.
Rebound in domestic services and industry
In raw data, the total number of companies created in the last twelve months, that is, from February 2023 to January 2024, increased by 1.1% compared to the same months of the previous year.
In December, for all of 2023, this figure fell by 1%.
In January, creations “rebounded strongly” in domestic services activities (+5.3% after -1.1%), in industry (+8.5% after -8.3%) and in accommodation and catering (+10.1% after -4.3%).
However, they fell in real estate activities (-4.2% after +0.2%).
In three months (from November 2023 to January 2024), the accumulated number of companies created increases significantly compared to the same months of the previous year (+6.0%). This increase is notably driven by the sector that includes home delivery.
Strong increase in the creation of microbusinesses
The 1.1% increase in the total number of companies created in the last twelve months (from February 2023 to January 2024) is mainly due to microentrepreneurship.
The creation of companies under this regime is growing “notably”, highlights the INSEE (+5.4%).
On the contrary, the creation of companies (-6.9%) and traditional individual companies (-3.0%) “decrease noticeably.”
Like every month since last year, INSEE warns about the implementation of the electronic window for commercial procedures.
“The evolution of business creation compared to the year 2023 must be interpreted with great caution,” specifies the National Institute of Statistics, adding that “the significant change” that the application of this instrument has brought about “has weakened the economic monitoring of the creation of companies”. during the year 2023.
