Are some big retailers more reluctant to accept price increases demanded by manufacturers and farmers? Guest this Monday morning at Business B.F.M., the general manager of the Bel group (Kiri, The Laughing Cow, Babybel) responded that there were no “good and bad students” in business negotiations. “Today, with the entire cast, we managed to have a real speech,” said Cécile Béliot.
Last Friday, the Ministry of Agriculture called on large retailers to accept price increases for milk and dairy products, estimating that the increases obtained so far would be around 6-7% instead of the 12-13% expected by suppliers. “Everything is absolutely true. All these figures are true,” confirmed Cécile Béliot. “That’s why we’re going to keep raising prices. […]. We must understand today that we have had a first tsunami of inflation and that the war in Ukraine is not over.
A “bad debate”
For Bel’s general manager, “we must stop opposing rural poverty to urban poverty” on the issue of inflation, because it is a “bad debate.” “Obviously we must revalue the work of those who feed us and we must also address the problem of food insecurity,” he said. “There are between 6 and 10 million French people who, when they enter a supermarket, count every penny”, but “it is not like that for everyone”.
“All the rest of the population must understand that […] what lies behind what you buy is health, it is the well-being of those who feed us, it is the impact of carbon. It’s about the food,” said Cécile Béliot.
