Finance Minister Fernando Medina said on Friday that the extraordinary support to deal with inflation has already reached 3.8 million Portuguese, totaling EUR 1,123 million.
Fernando Medina spoke at a hearing in the Budget and Finance Committee (COF), in Parliament, about the proposal for the National Budget for 2023 (OE2023).
“The government made 1,123 million euros to reach more than three million and 850 thousand Portuguese, of which 420 thousand are children”the official said, explaining that this includes exceptional support for workers’ income and exceptional support for retirees.
The person in charge of the Finance portfolio assured that: “In the coming weeks, the receipt of support will be finalized”.
Although I admit it “these supports do not completely cancel out the price increase”Fernando Medina defended that “they help mitigate its effects”, noting that the middle class is being hit by the rise in prices.
It concerns the extraordinary aid to holders of income (other than pensions), amounting to 125 euros, which began to be paid this Wednesday by the Tax Authorities (AT), for people with a gross annual income of up to 37,800 euros in the 2021 income tax return. and residents of Portugal.
People who find themselves in this situation and have dependents up to 24 years old (or without an age limit in the case of dependents of people with disabilities) receive, in addition to the 125 euros, an additional support of 50 euros per child, this amount is awarded to people identified in the IRS statement as the respective parental guardians.
At the end of the hearing, the finance minister said in a statement to journalists that he assured that in the coming weeks the Tax and Customs Administration (AT) will regularly try to make the payment to those people who do not have the support due to a technical inaccuracy or failure to update. of the IBAN.
“People who don’t get support in the next few days or weeks don’t have to worry because they won’t be banned from receiving it”said Fernando Medina, specifying that once this technical problem is regularized, “there will always be an attempt by AT to make that payment until it is able to process it”.
One of the reasons for the technical inaccuracy may be that the IBAN that the taxpayer has declared to the AT is no longer valid because the account no longer exists, for example.
The Treasury Secretary announced earlier this week that AT would begin paying support on Wednesday, at a rate of 500,000 processes per day, with an estimate that the process would be completed in 10 days.
Social Security will start paying the 125 euros next Monday, which covers 1.6 million beneficiaries, namely people who receive social benefits such as a social insertion income or unemployment benefit.
According to Medina’s statement, the exceptional allowance for retirees is also at stake to mitigate the impact of inflation, which is equivalent to half the value of their pension.
