Biofuels: a turnkey solution to face a double crisis

[CONTENU PARTENAIRE] The search for alternative renewable solutions is in the DNA of Neste, a Finnish company and world leader in biofuels for road transport and aviation. Johannes Hartig, European Sales Director, explains the group’s ambitions.

How are Neste’s biofuels an answer to the energy and climate crises?

For several months we have been experiencing an unprecedented situation consisting of an energy crisis coupled with a climate crisis. Today it is even more important to guarantee France’s energy independence by taking into account all energy solutions, including renewable diesel called HVO 100 or XTL.

Since 1996, our company has been developing renewable fuels for land and air transportation, capable of meeting environmental challenges, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and implementing solutions that significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Supporting both energy independence and environmental protection is a must. We continually look for new ways to reduce the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere and innovate circular solutions. Our goal: to become the world leader in renewable and circular solutions.

How is the regulatory framework not adapted to these biofuels?

Both users and companies understand the climate problems and ask for alternatives. But France is late: the European Commission has already increased the compulsory incorporation rate of biofuels for road transport by 2030.

However, the share of authorized biofuels in France has not changed since 2019 (+0.27% in 7 years according to the DGDDI) and there is a growing tendency to give subsidies in favor of fossil fuels to reduce the impact of the energy crisis .

In addition, the measures taken by the government are not enough incentives for users to turn to renewable energies.

However, demand for Neste’s biofuels continues to grow in France. Therefore, they are a real, more competitive alternative that allows France to achieve its greenhouse gas reduction targets.

What current projects have you implemented?

Recently, we accompanied the music group Coldplay on their world tour and cut their greenhouse gas emissions in half thanks to our renewable fuels used both in concerts through generators and in transport through airplanes.

In France, one of the most important markets for Neste, several transport companies have chosen our renewable diesel, following the example of our partner MAN France. The same goes for Compagnie des Alpes, who use our solutions in their ski resorts and amusement parks. Yet another project, our fuel was used for the generators of the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix. Even the Ile-de-France Region is approaching us to decarbonize its buses.

In addition, we continue to improve our supply chain: last April we achieved the first transport of renewable diesel by pipeline in Europe through the Trapil pipeline, which transports our fuels from Le Havre to Paris. An innovation that has made it possible to supply warehouses in the Parisian region and reduce greenhouse gases by 92% compared to conventional transport by tanker trucks.
