Tolls on highways could rise 10.46% in 2023, if the estimate of annual inflation for October, excluding housing, released Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) is confirmed.
The formula determining how the increase in the toll price is calculated each year is included in Legislative Decree No. Housing, verified on the mainland in the last month for which data is available before 15 November.
November 15 is the deadline for concessionaires to submit their pricing proposals to the government for the following year, after which the state has 30 days to comment.
In its quick estimate of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) released today, INE states that annual inflation, excluding housing, will have been 10.46% on the continent by October. Final data will be known on November 11.
In 2022, the evolution of the CPI dictated an increase in tolls of 1.83%, and in 2020 and 2021 prices were not changed, after four consecutive years of increases: in 2019, tolls on motorways increased by 0.98%, after increases of 1.42% in 2018, 0.84% in 2017 and 0.62% in 2016.
As for the price of the toll on the two Tagus bridges under the concession of Lusoponte – 25 de Abril and Vasco da Gama – it could increase by 9.3% from January 2023, as the concession holder’s contract stipulates that the tariff update is indexed to an annualized rate of change in the September CPI.
