China said it was “very dissatisfied” and “firmly opposed” to new US sanctions against Chinese companies over their ties to Moscow, a Chinese commerce ministry spokesman said on Sunday.
Beijing “urges the United States to immediately stop its bad practices and will take necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies,” a ministry spokesman said.
Washington on Friday announced a new set of sanctions targeting 400 entities and individuals in Russia, Belarus, China and other countries, including some sixty defense technology companies, including “products and services that allow Russia to support its war effort” in Ukraine.
Sanctions evasion
“Today’s decisions target those who engage in sanctions evasion, including in China, as well as those who support Russia’s future energy production and exports,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.
The ministry has named around 15 Chinese companies accused of continuing to supply components to Russian industry.
On Sunday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce deplored these “unilateral sanctions” that “disrupt the order and rules of international trade, hinder international economic and trade exchanges, and threaten the security and stability of global industrial and supply chains.”
These sanctions result in the freezing of assets held directly or indirectly by the persons and companies targeted by these sanctions in the United States, as well as the prohibition of any US person or company from dealing with the targets of these sanctions, at the risk of being sanctioned in turn.
They also close the doors of the United States to all targeted individuals.
