Energy sobriety: the Air France plan

The airline, like all major transport players, has submitted its roadmap to the government to achieve energy savings.

As in other sectors, the government has asked transport players to take general measures to reduce their energy consumption. With a clear objective: reduce this consumption by 10%.

Transport is at the forefront since, according to Clément Beaune, Minister of Transport, “it represents 30% of our country’s energy consumption. Much of the answer to sobriety and carbon neutrality commitments lies in transportation. Decarbonization concerns all modes of transport The rules must change, the practices must change”.

After the SNCF -which will significantly intensify the use of ecological driving on its trains (allowing a reduction of 8 to 10% of electricity consumption on a trip)-, Air France presented its roadmap to the Government on Tuesday.

No more telecommuting

This plan is based on three axes. The airline will accentuate the energy sobriety of its buildings, in particular through the development of teleworking (up to 3 authorized days per week).

Specifically, it will try to maintain the closure of the headquarters and several premises on Fridays, which represents a saving of 3,000 MHW per year, due to the implementation of the flex office and the reduction of the housing stock.

By the end of 2022, Air France will have reduced its real estate footprint for administrative premises by 25%, the group says.

The company also announces the reduction in the lighting duration of its premises, the automatic switch-off of lights and illuminated signs between 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., the automatic switch-off of electronic devices (coffee machines, printers, etc.) and the generalization of the LED Turning on.

As requested by the government, the heating will be activated at 19° vs. 21° previously and the air conditioning at 26° vs. 23° previously.

Objective: reduce the energy consumption of its buildings by 40%

Air France also indicates that it has signed an EcoWatt “Electricity Weather” contract with RTE, which allows the company to be alerted in the event of a peak in energy consumption on the network so that it can take corrective measures to reduce or postpone its consumption. and thus avoid cuts.

The thermal insulation works will begin through the Energy Savings Certificate system.

Finally, the company says that it is carrying out studies for the installation of heat pumps, photovoltaic panels (already installed at a site in the south of France and under study at one of the Paris-Charles de Gaulle) and smart electricity meters. 

Overall, Air France says it has already reduced its buildings’ energy consumption by 23% since 2011 and is targeting 40% by 2030.

The second axis is support for the mobility of employees with the reimbursement of 100% of subscriptions to public transport (measure already in force),

But also the provision of a carpooling platform to employees (multiplication by 4 of uses compared to 2020), and the installation of charging points for electric vehicles (140 to date, target 450 by the end of 2024, is say, 5% of parking spaces).

The third axis is to raise awareness among the workforce through internal communication campaigns on “eco-gestures”, carpooling, good IT practices (limitation of email and data storage).
