Dominique Schelcher, president of the Cooperativa U (formerly Système U), acknowledges that the mass retail market is currently “difficult with a -1.6% volume in the first half of 2024”, he said on Monday on BFM Business.
“But not everyone is doing badly,” adds the manager. “The three independents, and in particular our cooperative, are doing well because they remain connected to the countryside and to their customers.”
This is not the case for “those who have distanced themselves from prices and investments”, such as Casino, whose stores have been taken over by Intermarché, Auchan and Carrefour.
Conviction
Enough to create opportunities for the cooperative. “I think there will be shops to buy from and there we will analyze, look and do things,” the president announced.
