Don’t heat your home despite the cold or skip a meal when you’re hungry. This type of arbitration is part of the daily life of one in four Europeans, according to a Secours populaire barometer published this Thursday. In detail, 27% of those surveyed said they were in a precarious situation, which led them to give up certain needs.
For this first European Secours Populaire study, Ipsos interviewed 6,000 people, over the age of 18, from six countries (Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Poland and the UK).
Due to a “difficult financial situation”, 62% of Europeans have already restricted their movements. 47% of them have already given up heating their houses despite the cold. It also happened to 29% of these people who skipped a meal when they were hungry.
51% of Greeks affected
But poverty affects different countries differently. Thus, 51% of Greeks say they are in a precarious situation, compared to 24% of French and 18% of Germans.
“A situation that is all the more difficult as it follows two years in which the standard of living had been marked by the impact of the health crisis,” he adds.
Families especially affected
Families are particularly affected. Nearly one in two parents has already given up on her son going on vacation or enrolling him in an extracurricular activity. There are also 33% who say that they are not always able to give their child a varied diet. Here again, the Greeks are particularly numerous to deal with these difficulties.
To “provide good living conditions” to their children, 76% of parents deprive themselves of leisure and 48% of food, the survey also points out. The Secours populaire supported almost 3.5 million people in difficulty last year.
This survey was conducted from June 17 to July 6 with a sample of 6,000 people representative of the national population aged 18 and over in each of the six countries surveyed, according to the quota method. In each country, 1,000 people were interviewed.
