Budget: two amendments adopted that repeal the pension reform, a symbolic victory for the left

The Social Affairs Committee adopted two amendments to repeal the pension reform. But this vote only modified one annex of the PLFSS. The article containing this annex was also rejected. The discussion in next week’s chamber will in any case start from the Government’s initial text.

This Thursday, the left-wing and RN deputies adopted in committee the amendments of the LFI and the PS to repeal the pension reform and claimed a political “victory” of essentially symbolic meaning. The two socialist and rebel amendments to the draft Social Security budget (PLFSS) for 2025 were approved by 38 votes to 19, along with those of the left and the RN.

A symbolic vote, which modified an appendix to the text studied in the Social Affairs Commission. Especially since the article containing the annex was rejected, this time with the votes of the RN, as well as the income part of this budget, rejected unanimously. Without consequences, since in any case it is the initial project of the Government that will later go to the chamber.

“This vote confirms that there is a majority in the Assembly to include the repeal of the pension reform in the PLFSS,” the PS nevertheless welcomed in a press release. “Victory!” proclaimed the president of the LFI group, Mathilde Panot, in X.

“It won’t change anything”

Because the left, limited in its amendments by the rules of financial admissibility and engaged in a confrontation with the RN to be the first force to demand a repeal, intends above all to use it as a political argument.

“Nor do I want us to lie to the people who listen to us. We are in the process of modifying an annex to the PLFSS and in no case repeal the reform,” insisted general rapporteur Yannick Neuder (LR), hostile to the amendment like the rest of the government coalition.

“It won’t change anything, it is at best an appeal amendment,” added RN MP Thomas Ménage. His colleague Christophe Bentz reminded the left that the majority of his deputies did not vote on Wednesday in the same room in favor of a repeal bill proposed by the National Rally.

The left argued in turn that, unlike RN, it could guarantee parliamentary mobility with the Senate thanks to the days reserved for its groups in the upper house.

The RN will be able to defend its text in the chamber during the day reserved for the National Assembly on October 31, but could be forced to renounce it after having been completely emptied of substance in committee. La France insoumise registered its repealing text in the National Assembly on November 28, in its parliamentary “niche.”
