“The cans of canned tuna on the market are not dangerous to health”, in a statement published on Tuesday, the Federation of Canned Food Manufacturers (FIAC) reacted to the investigation by the NGO Bloom which ensures that cans of tuna are in largely contaminated. with mercury.
The FIAC denounces “the results” of what it considers a “communication campaign” and recalls that “contrary to what is currently disseminated without contradictory debate, (…) the consumption of canned tuna is one of the recommendations of consumption of fish as part of a balanced diet: it is not dangerous for health and the products offered to consumers scrupulously respect French and European regulations.
“Hundreds of analyses” every year
The Federation adds that “this demanding regulation, based on scientific criteria of maximum admissible daily doses and thresholds rigorously defined by experts from the European Health Security Agency (EFSA, European Food Safety Authority), aims to protect the health of French and European consumers.
And he continues: “To date, this database has more than 2,700 analysis results collected over 8 years at the French level. The mercury content is on average 0.2 mg/kg, well below the limit of 1 .0 mg/kg authorized to guarantee consumer safety, the results obtained are far below those disseminated in an alarmist manner by activist associations that only analyzed 148 samples throughout Europe.
For this reason, professionals in the canned tuna sector claim to want to “reestablish the reality of the facts”, that is, that “canned tuna on the market is not dangerous to health.”
