Trade war: Thierry Breton threatens the United States with retaliatory measures

thierry breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, reacts to the United States announcement of subsidies to attract companies. Threatens Washington with retaliatory measures

The confrontation between Europe and the United States is inevitable since the announcement by Washington of the IRA (Inflation Reduction Act) that has a budget of 367,000 million euros to encourage production and job creation in the United States. This Monday, in the press and on BFMTV, Bruno Le Maire criticizes this text which, according to him, threatens French and European industry.

“Since August I have sounded the alarm. I see the impact of this IRA put on the table (…) which raises fears of a distortion of competition”, announces Thierry Breton.

Thierry Breton is firm on these points.

“Firm with our American friends.”

On Monday, on BFMTV, Bruno Le Maire cited a case that illustrates the tensions with the United States and the power of the IRA. For more than a year, Bercy has been arguing with a company specializing in electric vehicles whose name is not mentioned. This company wants to invest and create 5,000 jobs in France, so it offers a subsidy of one billion euros.

For the Minister of Economy, “we must show the greatest firmness with our American friends,” the minister warns.
