In October, cinemas lost nearly a million euros in revenue and 172,000 spectators, compared to the same month of 2021, the Instituto do Cinema e Audiovisual (ICA) announced this Tuesday.
According to the ICA, October this year was the only month in which commercial cinema exhibits achieved the worst results, comparing the years 2021 and 2022 on a monthly basis.
The decreases last month were around 17%, for a total of 4.7 million euros and 810,687 tickets issued, compared to October 2021.
The ICA still lacks data for November and December, but indicates that the commercial exhibition of cinema in Portugal this year has a total of 7.5 million spectators and 43.2 million euros in gross box office revenue.
In the case of box office revenue, that amount registered between January and October represents a 101% increase compared to the same period in 2021. In terms of audience, the increase is 95% compared over the same period.
This year, 321 films have already premiered in Portuguese cinemas, representing a 65.5% increase over 2021, which may also reflect an adjustment in distributors’ pace in terms of delayed premieres due to the Covid-19 pandemic. means.
NOS Lusomundo Audiovisuais is still the market leader, with 17.8 million euros in box office revenue, with data recorded until October, but with little difference in results for the distributor Cinemundo, which totals 16.1 million euros.
In terms of audience, NOS Lusomundo Audiovisuais’ films had a total of three million spectators this year and Cinemundo’s films yielded 2.8 million tickets.
In the field of cinema exhibitions, the NOS cinema network (with 214 screens) is far in the lead, with 28.9 million euros raised this year and 4.9 million spectators.
Although it is the fourth largest exhibitor in terms of number of cinemas – there are 44 – the UCI is in second place in terms of turnover and audience, with 4.1 million euros and about 765,000 spectators this year.
