Pedro Nuno Santos: “TAP wants to pay more if it flies more and pay less if it flies less”

TAP started in September canceling the pending Company Agreements (AE) with the unions representing pilots and cabin crew. The Minister of Infrastructure and Housing rejects that the new proposals on the table are based on wage cuts, but says more flexibility is needed in the context of payments.

“The goal is not to lower employee pay, but rather – and this is not hidden – to achieve greater flexibility: pay more if you fly more and pay less if you fly less,” said Pedro Nuno Santos who, clarified. , “the goal is not that the employee gets less at the end of the day”, but that “the variable part” [da remuneração] may be larger and the fixed smaller”.

During the discussion on the National Budget 2023, which has been taking place in the House of Representatives since 4 p.m., the minister also underlined the need for TAP to update the current agreements. “TAP needs renewed and upgraded LR. TAP operates in a highly competitive international market and this cannot be ignored,” he assured.

Pedro Nuno Santos said he believed “TAP employees understand” and assured that there would be “open negotiations” with the employee representatives of the various functions.

It is recalled that TAP cabin crew approved a strike announcement for December 8 and 9 last week, following TAP’s proposal for the new AE.

The employees believe that the proposal for the new EA presented by TAP on October 14 “does not live up to the expectations that the company itself has raised during the ATE negotiations. For reasons, economic and social, to even be discussed,” they defended.

On the other hand, the negotiations with the pilots are somewhat looser. The carrier and the pilots have just entered into an agreement to provide additional service during holidays and days off, which provides for the exceptional compensation with no cuts. This comes at a time when TAP admits to canceling up to seven flights a day between November 15 and the end of December.

“Will SPAC still be accused of blocking violence? We don’t think so. [o acordo] does it gain space at the negotiating table, what really matters, such as the contours of the new LR? yep. We want it and it can be of an unpredictable dimension,” the union structure defended in an internal note released by Lusa.
