Brussels proposed this Wednesday to limit the income of companies producing electricity with nuclear and renewable energy, and to demand a “solidarity contribution” from gas and oil groups, in order to help homes and companies in the face of rising energy bills.
“Low-carbon” electricity producers are reaping massive revenues “inflated by rising gas-indexed tariffs” and therefore we will propose to redirect these windfall profits to support vulnerable people and businesses,” said Commission President European, Ursula von der Leyen.
200 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) maximum
He also asked to take a cut of the “enormous profits of fossil fuel companies.”
According to Reuters, which was able to consult this project, the price of electricity produced by sources other than natural gas would be capped at 200 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) in the Union. Member States would also aim to reduce their consumption by 10% per month compared to the average of the corresponding month over the last five years.
