Energy: Medef fears a “collapse” of the industry if there is no European agreement

Faced with the energy crisis, the vice president of Medef said she feared a “collapse” of the European industry if the EU countries did not agree on a common solution.

Faced with the rise in energy prices, French businessmen are concerned about the competitiveness of companies. Medef, which called for a review of European rules on Wednesday, says it fears a “competitiveness shock” with the United States or China over disagreements between European countries.

“We saw the birth of shields in different countries. There was the Spanish solution, the Greek solution, the German solution […]. Everyone has their little solution. […]. It will give competition between European countries, against China and the United States. We have an urgent interest in agreeing a European solution”, declared Dominique Carlac’h, calling for a cap on the price of gas and to de-correlate the price of gas with the price of electricity.

A meeting of the European chief

Business Europe, the “European Medef” in a way, will meet next week in Stockholm, to try to harmonize the positions of the main European business organizations, such as Mede, Confindustria (Italy) and BDI (Germany). “We are going to discuss between companies, between bosses, telling each other […] that we cannot let the competitiveness of our European companies collapse because the institutions cannot agree”, he explained.

For the vice president of Medef, the risk is that “the industrial extensions that were planned to re-industrialize our country or Europe” “occur elsewhere,” such as the United States. “New investments will be made where it is cheaper to produce,” he said.
