“180 million euros that fly every day”: encouraged parliamentarians to accelerate the electrification of France

Around twenty signatories underline in an open letter “the emergency” to accelerate “transfers of use to electricity”, in transport, industry and buildings that still depend a lot on fossil fuels.

As a debate in the Parliament on the sovereignty of energy, about twenty federations and professional energy organizations call deputies and senators on Thursday to initiate a “real break in the electrification of uses” to reduce the dependence of France of imported and expensive fossil fuels.

Among the signatories are the French Union of Electricity, actors in renewal (Enerplan, France Hydro Electricité, France renewable, being) and nuclear (Gipen, SFEN). They underline “the urgency” to accelerate “transfers of use to electricity”, in transport, industry and buildings that still depend a lot on fossil fuels.

A parliamentary debate on energy sovereignty on May 6

On the proposal of Prime Minister François Bayrou, the National Assembly on April 28, the Senate on May 6 will organize a debate on energy sovereignty after 4 years of a great consultation to build the new energy sheet of France for the period 2025-2035. This multiple energy programming (PPE) must put France on the path of carbon neutrality in 2050 by reducing the participation of fossil fuels in the consumption of around 60% in 2023 to 30% in 2035.

This project was approved on March 27 by the Superior Energy Council, and remained to publish the decree. However, the adoption of this PPE was strongly criticized by the parties that go from the center to the extreme right to Parliament, as well as by the defenders of nuclear energy, denouncing too much support for renewable energies to the detriment of the atom according to them. Many energy players press so that the decree is published as quickly as possible and call to stop political procrastination, for fear of lack of visibility to invest and recruit.

The decree will be published “for the summer of summer”, after the debate without vote in Parliament, indicated in early April the cabinet of the Sophie Primas government spokesman. The decree may be subject “any modification according to the parliamentary debates that will take place during the discussion” of a law of Senator LR Daniel Gremillet. This already adopted in the first reading of the Senate will be discussed in the National Assembly “The second half of June”, according to Mrs. Primas.
