Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney promised to launch “the greatest transformation of the Canadian economy on Friday since the end of World War II”, during his first press conference after his electoral victory on Monday.
The latter won a historic victory on Monday in the early legislative elections after a campaign completely focused on Donald Trump’s threats.
“The Canadians have chosen a new government to face President Trump and build a strong economy,” he told Ottawa. “As Prime Minister, I heard these high and strong messages, and I will monitor the application and determination.”
An occupied agenda
Mark Carny announced that he would go to Washington on Tuesday to meet with President Donald Trump and discuss “current commercial pressures” but also “future economic and security relations” between the two countries.
He explained that his government would be established during the week of May 12. Then, that the Parliament, suspended since January, would return on May 26 and that King Carlos III in person would say the discourse of the throne.
This solemn speech, which marks the opening of a new session of the Parliament of Canada, is generally pronounced by the general governor, who is the king’s representative in the country.
“This is a historical honor,” he said. “This clearly shows the sovereignty of our country,” he added, referring to Donald Trump’s wishes to make the country in the 51st American state.
